OUR MISSION is to create a community/safe space that welcomes and includes Everyone in STem

Why we started this mission

Our team realized that most LGBTQ+ conferences at competitions tend to be directed towards allies and learning to include LGBTQ+ students rather than LGBTQ+ students themselves. It can be very isolating to look around for others like you and only see things directed at your allies. While we welcome and are thankful for those programs and conferences, this conference is directed to LGBTQ+ students. We wanted to create a safe space that welcomes LGBTQ+ students to speak to others and share their experiences. This initiative was created to show a fairly vulnerable population that they are not alone in STEM and they are a stronger group than they sometimes realize. The reason we started this initiative was that some students spoke up about how they felt alone in STEM and when our team started to show our welcome and pride in them, we were met with a lot of discrimination that we were forced to work through. People's attempts to silence us have only made us grow stronger and we want to share that struggle, that story, and that experience with others to encourage them to join in FIRST and be proud of who they are.
